A recent article in the Wall Street Journal said that, “Small companies, which are making the leap to computerized systems and digital records, have now become hackers’ main target.”

Verizon Communications claims that 63% of data breaches in 2010 were at companies with 100 employees or fewer. Visa estimates about 95% of the data breaches it discovers are on Visa’s smallest business customers. A specialist at the FBI claims that hacker attacks against small businesses will get worse before they get better.

Small businesses tend to have limited budgets and less technical expertise on staff, which means weaker security.  Small businesses also tend to believe the size of their business precludes them from attacks. A survey by the National Retail Federation found that 64% of small businesses didn’t believe they were vulnerable to data theft and only 49% had assessed their security technology.

The sheer volume of security threats makes it difficult for small firms to protect themselves and the cost of a breach can put a small company out of business. Sometimes it is as easy as getting a hold of one not-so-competent employee.

Sticking your head it the sand won’t protect your business from data breaches. If a small business waits until after a breach occurs to assess the security of their data then the data breach will end up costing much more. A proactive data loss prevention strategy is the best form of protection. Think of it as a form of insurance. Protect your business now and you’ll have yourself major hassles, not to mention thousands of dollars.
